COUNTLESS DAYS OF LAUGHTER, MANY NIGHTS WITH TEARS,
I CAN’T IMAGINE WHAT YOU’VE SEEN IN THE LAST 60 YEARS
You’ve seen the Digital Revolution, which caused the Digital Divide,
You’ve seen 9/11 and the Tsunami tide.
11 Presidents; from resignations to assassinations,
Triumphed with Brown vs. Board of Ed, marking the end of segregation.
You’ve seen platform shoes and miniskirts, come and go, and come again,
You’ve seen the start of the Superbowl; Communism and WWII end.
When you saw the abolition of apartheid, you must have been proud,
Because right here, 50 years ago, there were “No Coloreds Allowed”.
You’ve seen rose-colored glasses turn dark and gray,
You have seen God giveth and God taketh away.
You’ve suffered through tragedy and unspeakable pain,
But like what you saw in New Orleans, you’ve rebuilt and withstood the rain.
You have seen your children’s children - and their children, like Biblical stories of multiplying generations, waiting to change the world – because WE have been built with the gene of fortitude and persistence….
WE COME FROM GOOD STOCK.
I look at my grandfather and see a noble man, who walked through the door of his home EVERY night when it would have been easier some days to just…walk away. I look at my grandmother who, till this day, I think is the most beautiful woman in world-
but more than that, sacrificed her life for her family.
I look at my grandparents and see my bow legs – They are our Wizard of OZ…
I see where Aunt Paula gets her strength,
Aunt Carol, her grace and charm,
I see my father’s heart of gold…
My Uncle Bobby’s sheepish grin that made knees buckle…
I SEE ALL OF US, IN YOU…
I am humbled and honored to wear your name…
I thank you for the example you have shown us…
