ACTION REQUEST: 25 JULY 06
BACKGROUND: The Government Efficiency Act (H.R. 5766) and the Abolishment of Obsolete Agencies and Federal Sunset Act (H.R. 3282), both pending in Congress this week, would create small, unelected “sunset commissions” with authority to revise or completely eliminate critical federal programs. The proposed commissions would be extremely partisan by design, with only a simple majority of the commission needed to alter radically federal programs. A commission could dramatically reorganize, change, and even eliminate important education programs, programs addressing other important issues, or federal protections such as those for clean air and water. Commission recommendations could go into effect automatically unless Congress acts affirmatively to stop them.
